Parents: Ways to Control Your Emotions

As a parent, raising children can be very stressful. Sometimes, you yourself forget to regulate your own emotions. To help keep your emotions regulated, it is always good to teach yourself how to identify your emotions and feelings early, before they escalate. Another strategy is to take good care of yourself. Don’t forget to eat, sleep, and relax, to improve your own health. If you are in good health, it becomes easier to regulate your emotions. Quality sleep is crucial for health and emotional regulation, therefore ensuring you are getting enough sleep is important.  Enough sleep has been defined as 7-8 hours every night (Health Canada). Exercise is also a good stress reliever and it promotes healthy living both for yourself and your children. It can be as simple as taking them out for walks or playing together at the park.  Another good activity is taking your children to the Ontario Early Years Centres, where the children get to play freely and the parents can supervise from a distance as well as talk with other parents and staff. If you have any concerns about your child you can talk to the friendly staff at the Ontario Early Years Centre, where they have been trained to assist you and can refer you to other community help as necessary.
