Mumps

Treatment

There is no current treatment for mumps, which is very concerning because it can cause long term health problems. At this time only symptom management is available.

Signs + Symptoms

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Loss of appetite

  • Muscle aches

  • Swollen and tender salivary glands

  • Fatigue

Some people may not even know they have the disease because their symptoms are so mild.

Vaccine schedule for children 0-6

2 vaccines between 12-15 months and 4-6 years.

Complications

Mumps can cause complications, which occur more often in adults.

This includes:

  • inflammation of the testicles, which can lead to sterility

  • inflammation of the brain

  • Meningitis

  • inflammation of the ovaries and/or breast tissue

  • deafness

Mumps is a very contagious disease that can be spread by coughing, sneezing and talking or indirectly by touching household items that have been used by someone infected with the mumps virus.
