Vaccine schedule for children 0-6

H. influenzae is spread through coughing and sneezing. People who are infected with Hib but aren't sick or showing symptoms can still spread the disease because the bacteria lives in the nose and throat.

4 vaccines at 2, 4, 6 months and 12-15 months

Treatment

H. influenzae is treated with antibiotics. Depending on the severity of the infection, some people may need help breathing, medications to lower blood breassure and wound care.

Complications

Even with treatment, some cases of Hib infections can cause long-term health problems and death. Meningitis can cause brain damage or hearing loss.

Complications for bronchitis and ear infections as a result of Hib are rare.

Signs + Symptoms

Hib causes many types of different infections. These can include:

Pneumonia

  • Cough

  • Chest pain

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle pain

  • Shortness of breath

  • Sweating

Bacteremia

  • Anxiety

  • Confusion

  • Diarrhea

  • Fatigue

  • Fever

  • Nausea

  • Stomach pain

  • Shortness of breath

Meningitis

  • Confusion

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Nausea with or without vomiting

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Stiff neck
