Identifying your Child's Triggers

Triggers refer to any given situation or sensitivity that can cause your child to react. When your child is reacting to a situation or circumstance, it is important for parents to take notice of where the child is, what they were doing and what was said when the child began to react. By doing this parents can assure themselves that they are prepared for future reactions and can learn the necessary coping skills to reverse the triggers and effectively soothe, regulate, and console their child. Once a parent recognizes a trigger, they can work together with their child to eliminate the trigger and hopefully help the child overcome the trigger. One thing to consider when thinking about your child's ability to regulate their emotions, is that there is a right time and right place for everything. For instance, some children require more time when waking up then others, and some learn better in certain environments. It's good to know how your child learns and reacts to avoid setting off their triggers. The OEYC has a Tucker Turtle program that goes through this with your child.
