Food Banks in the North Bay and Parry Sound District Communities
What is a food bank?
A food bank is a broad term for an organization that acquires, stores, and distributes food to hungry individuals and families in their community. Food banks receive support from both public and private initiatives, such as local food drives, umbrella organizations, local farms and agricultural programs, food and produce manufacturers and other types of distributors.
What can I expect when visiting a food bank?
Our member food banks vary in size and are often housed in community centres, local churches, and large warehouses. The staff and volunteers are committed to providing the best possible service and care to their clients. This devoted team of individuals are responsible for acquiring, stocking, and distributing food to clients in their local communities. When receiving items at the Food Bank, you will get a supply of food that will last about 3-5 days. Things such as bread and canned goods are items we offer. Men’s and women’s hygiene products are also available depnding on our donated stock. We have many products in store that change on a regular basis, depending on the current donations given.
Do I need to bring anything to the food bank?
When you visit a food bank in your area for the first time you will need to bring:
• Photo identification
• Proof of address
• Proof of monthly income and expenditures
Who can use the food bank?
The only requirement to use a food bank is need. When visiting one of our member food banks f-or the first time, you will be assessed as to how the food bank, agency or program can properly address your needs. This will ensure that you and your family receive the best support possible. Clients may visit the food bank for service once every 30 days.

Soup Kitchens and Meal Programs:
-
Like food banks, soup kitchens and meal programs are considered emergency food programs.
-
Community volunteers provide meals free of charge or at very low cost to people in need.
-
Organized in various ways, soup kitchens can offer one or multiple meals a day depending on available capacity and donations.
-
Soup Kitchens and meal programs provide a valuable community service that contributes to community food security, but they do not ensure a long term sustainable food system.
